About Brookville Veterinary Health

Brookville Veterinary Health is a family-owned partnership supporting the next generation of entrepreneurial veterinarians through joint venture hospital ownership. We partner with DVMs who wish to have a meaningful stake in a practice and to keep veterinary care local, personal, and independent.

BVH is founded by Dr. Peter Glassman, DVM, former Owner & Director of Friendship Hospital for Animals, the country’s largest independent practice at the time of its sale in 2020, and Ben Glassman, MBA, CVBL, a marketing, sales, and finance leader and a veterinary industry consultant.

BVH aims to operate its hospitals according to the same tenets that made Friendship Hospital for Animals successful:

  • We are in it for the long haul. BVH is a completely independent venture, with no outside investors. We look for long-term veterinarian partners whose goal is to be a positive force and leave a legacy of superb service to animals in their local community.

  • Pets are family. We provide care with the same urgency, empathy, and diligence you’d expect for a human family member.

  • Clinical excellence above all. We hold our hospitals to the highest standards of medicine, with rigorous protocols and innovative treatment plans. It is our duty to evolve with the veterinary industry and deliver the best care possible.

  • A clinic is a community. Veterinary work is a rewarding, yet emotional experience that is shared and shaped by everyone in a practice. We strive to build teams that are diverse, inclusive, and mutually supportive, and provide resources for success in and out of the practice.

  • Exceptional client service, always. Veterinary medicine is a personal, mom and pop business. We support pet parents with clear, empathetic communication and genuine, direct relationships—not one-size-fits-all systems or software.

Our Story

Brookville Veterinary Health’s mission—to partner directly with veterinarians and help independent practices thrive—traces back to Dr. Glassman’s 1982 purchase of Friendship Hospital for Animals. At that time, Friendship’s retiring owner and Dr. Glassman’s mentor, Dr. Harvey Cowan, offered to sell him the three-doctor practice. Dr. Glassman’s vision for a progressive hospital delivering advanced yet compassionate primary, emergency, and specialty care aligned perfectly with Friendship’s longstanding commitment to client service and clinical excellence.

Dr. Cowan personally financed the sale—no guarantor, no covenants—launching Dr. Glassman’s 40-year tenure of ownership. Under his leadership, Friendship grew into one of the nation’s premier companion animal practices, with 65 veterinarians, more than 200 staff, and a reputation for professional excellence that became the envy of the industry.

That highly unusual transaction represents one end of the ownership transition spectrum: a mentor taking an outsized risk on his associate veterinarian. At the other end of the spectrum is today’s wave of private equity and corporate takeovers, whose impact on the industry is widely scrutinized, but whose financial returns for selling owners may be substantial.

Brookville Veterinary Health was founded as an alternative to those models. As an independent financial sponsor and operating partner, we facilitate veterinarian-to-veterinarian transitions that preserve independence, strengthen practices, and keep the profession thriving, while allowing selling owners to receive fair, competitive valuations.

We are proud to help empower entrepreneurial veterinarians to become the next generation of owners.
